Health and Safety Procedures in the Department of Chemistry

The Internet based "Safety Manual" may be found at http://www.chemistry.nus.edu.sg/PSSO/Safety.htm.

If your time is to be spent in Office or Computing work solely, the information that you need to absorb will not be great, but for those working in workshops and laboratories, there is much more, in keeping with the greater potential hazards in those areas, hence it is important that you spend some time to read the Safety Manual.

Safety, Health and Environment Policy

We consider Safety and Health issues and protection of the environment as fundamental elements in all facets of our activities. It is most important that we all are committed to preventing accident, safeguarding the environment, and protecting our employees, students, clients and others from harm, thereby fulfilling our social responsibility as an university and earning the confidence of staff, students and society. To fulfill this supreme commitment, all staff and students are called upon to perform their tasks in compliance with the following policies:

1. Safety and Health

We will make every effort to ensure health and safety in all phases of teaching, research and development, design, procurement, construction and commissioning of equipments/ experiments and facilities that can be operated with sense of security and ease.

2. No Accidents and Injuries

We will make every effort to achieve no accidents and no injuries, by securing safe and healthy working conditions and by eliminating the risks of accidents.

3. Environmental Protection

We will make every effort to minimize and defuse wastes and emissions so that the local environment can be preserved and also to save energy and natural resources so that the global environment can be protected.

4. Conformance with Law and Regulations

We will comply with all applicable laws and regulations related to safety, health and environment which can be preserved and also to save energy and natural resources so that the global environment can be protected.

5. Education and Training

We will provide comprehensive education and training on health, safety and environment for our employees ,students and others who work with us, thereby enhancing job competency and awareness of the importance of health, safety and environment.

6. Continual Improvement

We will establish and implement a management system to secure health and safety in our activities as well as to protect the environment, and continually improve this system at all levels of our organization.

LIST OF SAFETY VIOLATION & ADMIN CHARGES/ STOP WORK/ NOT ALLOW WORK ORDER

Failure to use personal protective equipment such as lab coat, gloves, foot protective shoes, safety glass/ goggle, respirators. S$50
Failure to label chemicals, radioactive and bio materials. S$100
Wearing of gloves outside of lab or work area which may lead to spread of contamination. S$100
Unsafe storage of chemicals (flammables not stored in flammable cabinets, incompatible chemicals stored next to each other, chemicals left lying on floor, solvent without spill tray on floor, ) S$100
Unsafe electrical system (wires/cables on floors, overloading, use of power without sockets), S$100
Failure to ensure fire extinguisher near chemical/ hot work area S$100
Poor housekeeping in lab (obstruction of passage way/ escape routes, storing material on elevated location which may pose falling hazard, storage of combustibles near igniting points etc) S$100
Disposal of radioactive/ bio materials in normal rubbish bin S$100
Smoking in labs/ buildings/ facilities S$100
Purchasing violations (not through purchase order or central processing unit, without PI’s approval etc) S$200
Failure to attend safety committee meeting / safety inspection S$200
Non reporting of accidents / incidents S$200
Disposal of chemical/ biological & radioactive irregularities S$500
Any works carried out that is endangering life and other damages. Stop work order
