Digital Locking System

Overview

The digital locking system by Simons Voss from Germany is selected for implementation throughout Faculty of Science. The digital locking system will be implemented for all research and teaching laboratories in the Department of Chemistry. All staff and graduates with authorised access to the laboratories will be issued with a transponder programmed to allow access to the respective labs. A transponder will be loaned to the staff/student for use in the department for the duration here of his/her stay here. It must be returned before leaving the Department. Please fill in the Transponder Loan Form for the loan of transponder and Validation Form form to allow access to the respective locations.

The system will be implemented to replace all mechnical locks used for all doors leading to research and teaching laboratories with the use of Digital Locking Cylinders. At locations where Smart Card Access System (SCAS) is implemented, the Digital Control Unit will be implemented to allow digital locking system to work parallel. The wireless transponders have an effective range of 0.5 to 1 metres when in use with a Digital Locking Cylinder or a Digital Control Unit.

Digital Locking System

Modular construction, independent of type and number of doors, from the entrance door to barriers, elevators, rolling gates to office furniture doors – all can be integrated. Suitable for network use without wiring on the door and frame.

The system is protected against tapping and the transponder is protected against copying. Lost transponders are simply inhibited. All accesses are logged and can be evaluated if required. The security of the cylinders and mortise locks against opening corresponds to that of a mechanical cylinder and lock of DIN class 3. If a transponder is lost, it is not necessary to change the cylinder or to order expensive replacement keys.

All components are straightforward to install. Extensive cabling at the door is not necessary. Easy handling by the simple press of a button. Only minor operating costs and consequential costs. The digital components have a longer service life than mechanical cylinders.

Digital Locking Cylinder

The exterior dimensions of the digital locking cylinder of the locking and organization system 3060 correspond exactly to those of a standard mechanical cylinder. Can be replaced easily and quickly at any time. Operated with a transponder by radio. Instead of many different keys, only one transponder is required for all cylinders in a locking system. Access authorizations are granted using the locking plan.

The dimensions of the digital locking cylinder correspond to those of the standard mechanical cylinders. Since it is also equipped with a battery, it can be installed in all Euro profile doors without wiring. Existing mechanical cylinders can be replaced with no problems.

Meets the highest security demands with tap-proof data transfer using continually changing crypto codes. All accesses are logged and can be evaluated if necessary. The cylinder corresponds to a DIN class 3 mechanical cylinder as regards being secure against opening.

The digital locking cylinder has been installed at over 120 locations throughout the department at laboratories, corridors and many common places. There are 2 variant of digital locking cylinder being implemented: the normal cylinder and the Slam-Shut version.

The normal digital locking cylinder implementation works in the same way as you would use a lock. Activating the cylinder allows you to lock/unlock the cylinder.

The slam shut version, as the name implies, means that the door will be locked once it is closed; the transponder is required to open the door from outside

Technical data

  • Standard profile cylinder: stainless steel version
  • Standard length 30 x 30 mm, available up to 140 mm total length
  • Battery type: Sonnenschein SL-750, 3.6 V
  • Service life: approx. 60,000 operations
(the service life of the cylinder is many times longer)
  • Knob diameter: 30 mm
  • Memory for 8,000 transponders
  • Calendar function with access control, time control,
overlay mode, suitable for network use

Digital Control Unit

The digital control unit has the function of a key switch. It can be used to initiate and control functions: e.g., electrically operated doors, elevators, garage doors, barriers, alarm systems and motor locks. In addition, the unit is also used, with an interface, for time recording systems, canteen billing or for securing computer networks.

The Digital Control Unit has been added to the current 20 card access doors, allowing access via the transponders. In addition, 5 new doors are installed with this system to provide secure access to corridors. The Digital Control Unit has a range of about 0.5m to 1 m depending on the thickness of the wall and any interference in the surrounding area.

Signs have been added outside the door to help users aim at the receiver from outside the door

Transponders

Replaces mechanical keys and takes over the function of identity cards. Functions without contact by radio. At the simple push of a button, encrypted communication is initiated between transponder and locking cylinder, lock or control unit. The digital key is programmed with our software. The transponder is protected against tapping and copying. Identification in the system is performed by transmitting and receiving continually changing crypto codes. If a transponder is lost, it can be immediately blocked. This saves additional costs.

Technical data

  • Housing made of rough plastic
  • Maximum range: approx. 1.20 m (in combination with control unit)
  • Diameter 42 mm
  • With integrated lithium battery
  • up to 1 million operations with one battery
  • Degree of protection IP 65

Frequently Asked Question

Q: Why the implementation of Digital Locking System?
A:

The current mechnical lock is not capable of providing many modern security features. It does not provide time-based access controls and time access logging. The loss of keys will require the replacement of the locking cylinder and all the keys. Current card access systems requires physical contact with the staff/matric card and are prone to wear and tear.

Q: How does it work?
A:

Digital Locking Cylinders are used to replace all mechnical locking cylinders in the doors. Digital Control Units are used to interface with the electromagnetic locks. The cylinder will be free rotating when it is not activated. In the reception zone of the system, press the button on the transponder and the transponder will exchange the security code with the system. The system will then activate the lock, a beep will be heard and the user can then proceed to unlock the door

Q: Do I need to take the transponder out of my pocket / bag?
A:

The transponder works by radio frequency, no direct line of sight is required. Within the prescribed range, the transponder can be activated from within the pocket / bag. No physical contact of the transponder with the digital lock is required.

Q: Can hackers tap and steal the codes exchanged when i activate the system?
A:

The system works in a challenge and response manner. On activation, the system will challenge the transponder and the transponder will respond with the appropriate code. The challenge is not the same for activations and the tapping of one response will not be usable for the next activation.

Q: What if i lost my transponder?
A:

Lost of all transponder must reported immediately. The user will be responsible for any loss incurred in the location due to the loss of transponders not reported. Replacement transponder will be re-issued at the cost of $42 per transponder for first time loss and an additional penalty fee of $30 will be imposed for the next loss.

Q: How do i know if the digital locking cylinder has been activated?
A:

The cylinder will give 2 quick beep if the authorised user has activated the cylinder

Q: Why do i hear more than 2 quick beeps?
A:

If more than 2 quick beeps have been heard, this means that either cylinder or the transponder is low on battery. Please report the fault to the administrator immediately.
