Fact and Figures

Department of Chemistry offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in Chemistry. As of 2015, we have 50 academic faculty members and 20 teaching staff in the department. Some faculty members hold joint appointment with other departments in NUS and local research institutes. Faculty members are involved in teaching and research activities of all major areas of chemistry - analytical, inorganic, materials, organic and physical chemistry in the department. We also offer a range of Minor prgrammes from Nanoscience to Forensic Science. See our website for detailed information of our Major and Minor programmes.

Overall, we have more than 1000 undergraduate students and around 350 postgraduate students in the department. Undergraduate students are enrolled in the B.Sc (3 year program) or B.ScHon, (four year program). Besides taking courses on campus, many of our students actively participate in internship programs at local industries or in research institutes during the semester or summer holidays. The department also offer exchange or visit programs with many overseas universities. Details of these programs are available on the department website.
The graduate studies offer both M.Sc (Master in Science) by research and coursework and Ph.D. degrees in various disciplines. Strategic research focuses in Department include Catalysis, Materials Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry.

In the last 2 years, our faculty members have been awarded 3 NUS Young Investigator Awards, while 5 graduate students received the Best Graduate Researcher Award for their original work published in highly prestigious international chemical journals. Prof Loh Kian Ping was awarded the prestigious President's Science and Technology Awards in 2014.
The research programs at the department is supported by state of the art facilities such as NMR, X-ray, EM, Chromatography, Thermal Analysis etc. housed under Chemical, Molecular and Materials Analysis Centre (CMMAC). In recent years, the department publishes more than 300 papers per year in high impact internationally refereed journals.
