Production

Laboratory productions provide students with opportunities to demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and responsibility. Laboratory productions also serve to assist faculty in evaluating the potential of students as leaders as well as organizers.

To encourage resourcefulness on the part of directors, designer and members in realizing their ideas, they are expected to work within strictly set parameters. Students are also encouraged to help as much creative work outside of productions as they are capable of.

  1. Laboratory Safety

The productions policies require leader/director to ensure that ALL members in the Innovative Programme are in appropriate dress code (lab coat, long pants and covered shoes. Long hair should be tied up) while entering the laboratory. Students who failed to turn up in appropriate dress code will NOT be permitted to enter the lab.

Productions members are to ensure that:

    1. Members in the Innovative Programme are not allow to enter the lab at any time until they have filled out and signed the lab safety data sheet.
    2. Members in the Innovative Programme are wearing approved safety goggles at all times (covering the eyes) when working with chemicals, in the vicinity of others using chemicals, or in rooms where chemicals are available for use. We will not tolerate exceptions to this rule.
    3. Contact lens wearers are encouraged to wear glasses in the laboratory. Chemicals and vapors can lodge behind the contact lens and cause severe damage to the eyes. Contact lenses also make the use of an eye wash ineffective.
    4. No food and beverages will be allowed in the laboratory.

Production members are to prepare risk assessment sheet for every experiment and ensure it is approved before the start of experiment. Please refer to Appendix A for sample of Risk Assessment sheet.

  2. Preparation of Experiments

It is crucial to plan and calculate before every experiment as each and every mistake may results in undesired consequences. Hence, such planning requires people who are far-sighted and are proficient in chemical calculation.

The productions policies require members to discuss and plan experiments with respect to:

    1. Quantity of products needed
    2. Availability of reactants
    3. Types of apparatus needed
    4. Availability of apparatus
    5. Availability of laboratory
    6. Mentor supervision

It is also important to identify the hazards that may occur during every experiment. Hence, production leader/director should always discuss with mentors once production planning is completed.

Laboratory manual is to be prepared and given out to other members at least 1 day before experiment. Ensure members know what dangers and problems they will encounter before each experiment. Please refer to Appendix B and Appendix C for lab manual sample and apparatus used sample.

  3. Recording of experimental results

It is production’s duty to record every single experimental results (be it experimental success or failure). Production will need to analyse what went wrong during the experiments resulted in an experimental failure. Therefore, discussion with mentors is essential.

The log book and file will be passed down from previous batches and it is production leader/director’s duty to ensure that the log book and file are in good condition. Any receipts and letters are to be collected, labelled and filed for future references.

  4. Excel Spread Sheet

As Innovative Programme aims to mould revolutionary and Innovative Science and Technology into promising business development ideas, it is important to prove that our products are profitable. Thus, preparation of excel spread sheet is indeed vital. It will allow buyers to have a clearer view of the variable and the fixed cost of each experiment. Hence, production is expected to find out the large scale production variable and fixed costs. Here are some useful websites:

Please refer to Appendix D for a sample of the Excel Spread sheet.

  5. Minutes

The productions policies require members to record, type and file minutes for every meeting and experiment. Members are encouraged to follow or improve on the minutes format. Please refer to Appendix E for minutes format.
