Programme Overview

Innovative Programme is implemented in National University of Singapore as an enterprise promoted and operated by undergraduate students of the Science Faculty. Innovative Programme is a totally student-initiated programme which is supported by the Faculty of Science as well as the Department of Chemistry. The programme presents an opportunity for undergraduates not only to be trained in management, entrepreneurship and chemical processing skills under the recognition of Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS) but also acts as a platform for them to distinguish themselves. The programme is carried out either by developing new research projects or working on the successful platforms that previous teams have developed while working on individual tasks that is based on leadership roles, presentations and specialised skills and knowledge during the semester term.

Aims of Enterprise

• Give undergraduate students an exposure to the business world and to problems of project management and customer relations, as well as an opportunity to gain practical hands-on skills in chemical processing.
• Recognize how businesses are structured, and the cause-effect relationship of differing tasks within the company, to the economy and to the environment. This trains the students to incorporate thoughts about functional cooperation within and between different departments.
• Master career skills such as interpersonal communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution, and supervisory techniques at the end of their stint in the programme.

Current Strength

There are currently 10 undergraduates each tasked with diverse responsibilities, 2 Academic Mentors, a Scientific Advisory Board and an Active Alumni Board.

Achievements

• 1 week training workshop that inculcates the importance of production planning (Human Resource and Equipments), cost effectiveness and time management for process of scaling up laboratory scale.
• Capability to synthesis multigram of Ethyl (S)-3-Hydroxybutyrate (Enantiomer excess > 97%) by Baker’s Yeast fermentation.
