Prospective Graduates

The Department of Chemistry offers research programmes leading to MSc and PhD degrees. Prospective candidates would normally have attained at least a BSc (Hons) Class 2A degree, or equivalent, from a recognized university. Candidates should also possess an acceptable level of competency in the English language; good TOEFL and GRE scores are required.

A graduate student is expected to work independently, with supervision by up to three academic advisors on an original research project. A thesis is presented at the end of the candidature for formal examination. Formal coursework may be specified by the Department. NUS provide generous research scholarships for full-time students.

The Department has a current enrolment of 16 MSc and 289 PhD candidates. The graduate population in the Department includes not only Singaporean students but also those from foreign countries like Malaysia, India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, the Philippines, China, Germany, France, etc. This diversity makes for an excellent, multinational research environment that is almost matched by the multicultural backgrounds of the Department's academic staff.
