The Department of Chemistry offers research programmes leading to MSc and PhD degrees. Prospective candidates would normally have attained at least a BSc (Hons) Class 2A degree, or equivalent, from a recognized university. Candidates should also possess an acceptable level of competency in the English language; good TOEFL and GRE scores are required.
A graduate student is expected to work independently, with supervision by up to three academic advisors on an original research project. A thesis is presented at the end of the candidature for formal examination. Formal coursework may be specified by the Department. NUS provide generous research scholarships for full-time students.
The Department has a current enrolment of 16 MSc and 289 PhD candidates. The graduate population in the Department includes not only Singaporean students but also those from foreign countries like Malaysia, India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, the Philippines, China, Germany, France, etc. This diversity makes for an excellent, multinational research environment that is almost matched by the multicultural backgrounds of the Department's academic staff.
- At least 4-year B.Sc. or B.Sc. (Hons) Second Upper Degree or equivalent
- GRE: Aggregate score between 310 and 320 for Verbal & Quantitative Reasoning and a score of 3.5 for Analytical Writing
- TOEFL: Minimum score of 85 for Internet-based test OR
- IELTS: Minimum score of 6 (if medium of instruction at university is not English)

For every application submitted, a non-refundable application fee of S$20 (for online application) or S$40 (for hardcopy application) is payable. Applicants can either make payment via credit card (VISA, Mastercard or AMEX) or bank draft. If you are paying by bank draft, please complete the Application Fee Form and send it together with a bank draft (applicable for all international applicants). The bank draft has to be drawn on a bank in Singapore (in Singapore dollars) and made payable to “National University of Singapore”. Please write your name, mailing address and programme applied for at the reverse side of the bank draft.
Please take note that an application without the application fee payment will not be processed.

The University has not engaged any external agencies to undertake graduate student recruitment on its behalf. Candidates interested in our graduate programmes are advised to apply directly to the University and not through any agents.
