The theme for Chem Comm 2009 is Great Discoveries in Chemistry, which will explores how famous scientists e.g. chemists, physicists, mathematicians, have lived and worked and how they were led to make the discoveries for which they are best known. The scientists highlighted can be from broad interdisciplinary fields or from more specialized subfields but all of their discoveries must have impacted chemistry. Among the focus under this theme will be on their theoretical and experimental work, discoveries and inventions which have revolutionized science and society, the impact of these discoveries on our way of life as well as the major societal and moral issues involved. The multidisciplinary nature of the theme is reflected in the various background that these scientists came from and some examples of topics that can be covered under this theme include the following such as:- structural chemistry ( Niels Bohr, G.N. Lewis) , biochemistry (Charles Pederson, Donald Cram, Dorothy Hodgkin), nuclear science (Marie Curie, Glenn Seaborg), medicinal chemistry (Gerhard Domagk, Fleming, E.J. Corey), industrial chemistry (Fritz Haber, Leblanc-Solvay), material science (Carothers, Kroto, Smalley and Curl), environmental science (S. Rowland, M.J.Molina, P.J. Crutzen).
