M.Sc. Programme in Chemistry by Coursework

1. About the M.Sc. in Chemistry by Coursework

This programme is designed for students with either a 4-year Honours degree, or a 3-year degree with 2 years of working experience who would like to pursue a graduate degree in Chemistry. It is expected that the graduates of this programme will be well-equipped to secure senior industrial positions, or apply for advanced degree programmes (e.g. Ph.D.).

At the end of the course, the student will be equipped with up-to-date knowledge and skills that will enable him/her to execute and lead with confidence and perform leading roles as R&D scientists, managers and entrepreneurs in the practice of complex chemical processes.

We seek outstanding candidates who have keen interest in pursuing graduate studies to join us.

2. Entry Requirements & Programme Structures

Structure 1: For students with a 4-year (Honours) degree

Complete 2 full-time or 4 part-time semesters of course requirements.

Structure 1 is a 40-modular credit programme consisting of 4 Level 5000 essential modules (each of 4 modular credits), 4 Level 5000 elective modules (each of 4 modular credits) of coursework , and a research project equivalent to 2 coursework modules (8 modular credits).

Structure 2: For students with a 3-year degree + 2 years of relevant working experience

Complete 4 full-time or 8 part-time semesters of course requirements.

Structure 2 will be a 80-modular credit programme consisting of:

  • 10 Level 4000 elective modules (each of 4 modular credits): including up to 2 level 4000 modules which may be replaced by 2 Level 3000 modules and up to 4 Level 4000 modules may be replaced by 4 Level 5000 modules towards the fulfillment of this requirement
  • 4 Level 5000 essential modules (each of 4 modular credits)
  • 4 Level 5000 elective modules (each of 4 modular credits)
  • a research project equivalent to 2 coursework modules (8 modular credits)

Note: Students in Structure 2 have the option to read 2 Level 3000 modules in lieu of 2 Level 4000 modules.

For part-time students, the project must be finished within the maximum time span of three semesters, and minimum time span of 2 semesters if the targeted workscope can be achieved, as agreed by supervisor.

3. Area of Concentration

In order to cater to Singapore's growing need for skilled manpower in chemicals, electronics and biomedical industries, there are 4 areas of concentration available for students to choose from:

  1. Analytical Chemistry
  2. Synthetic Chemistry
  3. Materials Chemistry
  4. Medicinal Chemistry

To fulfill the requirements for each area of concentration, students are required to read at least 3 modules from 1 of the 4 Level 5000 subject groups (Analytical, Synthetic, Materials or Medicinal).
