Dr Mark Butler completed his PhD studies on the chemistry of Australian and Antarctic marine sponges in 1992 and then undertook postdoctoral work at the Cancer Research Institute, Arizona State University, under the supervision of Prof G. R. Pettit. In late 1994 he joined the newly established Queensland Pharmaceutical Research Institute (now Natural Product Research), a joint venture between Griffith University and AstraZeneca, where he continued his work on bioassay guided isolation and structure elucidation of natural products.
In November 1999, Mark moved to Singapore to lead the Natural Product Chemistry group at the Centre of Natural Product Research (CNPR), which was part of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology. In 2002, CNPR privatized to become MerLion Pharmaceuticals where his present position is Director of Natural Product Chemistry.
He has over 40 papers on various aspects of natural product chemistry and in 2002 was awarded the Matt Suffness (Young Investigator) Award by the American Society of Pharmacognosy. His research interests include the isolation, structure elucidation and absolute configuration of natural products, the development of natural product leads into pharmaceuticals and separation of compounds using liquid-liquid chromatography. He is currently collaborating with Martin Lear on the synthesis of some new potential antimalarial agents.
