Research Interests

Organometallic Materials and Catalysis

We are interested in a range of scientific challenges and technological problems. Some of them are given belows:

a) Metallocenyl Catalysis

We are developing a range of highly unsaturated metallocene-functionalized complexes that are catalytically active in C-C coupling reactions. We extend the scientific spectrum from ligand design, through complex syntheses, to catalytic investigations and mechanistic explanation.

b) Bioorganometallic Chemistry

We use rhenium complexes as models to study radiolabelling, imaging, therapeutic and other biomedical applications. Recently, we have developed a range of [Re(CO)]3 chelates for possible use as therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, especially in the area of hepatocellular carcinoma. The interaction between these Re agents and lipiodol are being studied

c) Solution Metallo-Metallo and Metallo-Organic Interactions Under Ambient & Pressurized Conditions

Much of the current development of the {Pt2S2} and {Pt2Se2} chemistry are rooted to our long-standing effort in this area. In recent years, we have extended from the original structure-based investigations to metal-mediated synthesis, electrochemical exploration, and ESMS-inspired combinatorial-type syntheses. The rich chemistry revealed insofar has prompted us to extend the boundary to study intermolecular interactions under ambient as well as pressurized conditions. The enhanced intermolecular interaction in bimolecular reactions could yield new products hitherto unknown, or to suppress unimolecular-type decomposition that would have otherwise taken place. This project aims to expand the current synthetic technology to unorthodox means in an attempt to create new products that are medically and/or technologically significant. Our recent attempt in the synthesis of organosulfur is one of such examples.

d) ESMS-Directed Heterometallic Syntheses

We have developed Fenn's ESMS technique to a combichem-type methodology that facilitates parallel chemical syntheses and in situ monitor of reactions. We are currently studying a range of other molecular systems.

e) Supramolecular Assembly

A number of metals, spacers and other functionalites are being explored, with an intention to understand (and hopefully control) the intermolecular forces and shape the supramolecular assembly. Parallel to this, we are also developing molecular geometries that are structurally distinctive. A typical example is a molecular square recently identified in our laboratory
