Research Interests

Analytical Chemistry

Our research interests are focused on capillary electrophoresis, liquid chromatography (LC, including nano-LC), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. We have a particular interest in developing extraction procedures like cartridge- and disk-based solid-phase extraction, and solventless and solvent-minimised extraction procedures such as solid- and liquid-phase microextraction (see figure below). Other interests in extraction are on microwave-assisted extraction, and super- and subcritical fluid extraction. All these techniques are mainly applied to environmental analyses although we employ them for the analysis of molecules of biological importance as well. Some analytes of current interest include environmental carcinogens such as heterocyclic aromatic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, phenols, organometals, inorganic anions, endocrine disruptors and biological compounds like steroids, chiral drugs, etc.

We are additionally interested in the LC retention behaviour of transition metal complexes important in catalysis. We are developing new inorganic materials for use in inorganic synthetic and industrial catalytic reactions, including the chemical detoxification of environmental pollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls, etc).
