Brief description of current research work: My primary research interests focus on using self-assembly concepts in materials chemistry.

1.Soft Materials : Synthesis and characterization of organic molecules and polymers :

Self-assembly of molecules and macromolecules is very common in Nature. However, mimicking the natural self-assembly processes and their preciseness in an unnatural world is rather difficult. Many elegant approaches to understand the self-assembly of molecules in the solid state, in solution, at the interface and in the mesophase have been reported by research groups around the world. During the past few years, we have designed a series of 3D-polyphenols based on the triphenyl methane core and many amphiphilic poly(p-phenylene) derivatives. The idea focuses on understanding the self-assembly of highly functionalized molecules and macromolecules in the solid state, in solution and at the interface to form functional architectures. Moreover, we are also interested in investigating the interplay of rigidity, orientation of the functional groups, electrostatic and van der Waals interactions towards controlling the self-assembly. Recently, we have shown that functional assemblies can be generated through controlled self-assembly of building blocks.

2. Biomaterials : Self-assembly in biomaterials synthesis and tissue engineering - hard tissue (e.g., bones, teeth, eggshells, sea shells, corals) formation in biological systems is well controlled and it provides a fascinating model and challenge for the creation of complex materials. Eggshells are interesting owing to their fast deposition rates in Avian species (~5g/24h) and providing physical protection to the embryo. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), the major mineral phase found in most of the eggshells is brittle and exists in three polymorphic forms such as the stable calcite and aragonite phases and metastable vaterite phase. We are interested in exploring the molecular mechanism of nucleation/formation of polymorphs of CaCO3 in organisms. Two approaches have been pursued in our group: one involving the analysis of biomaterials collected from Nature and the other focusing on the development of synthetic polymers that can act as a template or protein mimic in the in vitro mineralization of calcium carbonate. Recently, we have demonstrated significant progress in both areas.

3. Nanomaterials : We focus our efforts in two directions - first one involves the synthesis and characterization of novel materials and the second focuses the development of novel technologies such as nanolithography or atomic force microscope - facilitated nanoelectrochemical lithography. In the nanomaterial area, we have been working on the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured polymer-inorganic composites. Recently, we mixed hydrogels derived from hydroxylated polymethacrylates with mixed metal ferrite particles and produced a nanocomposite of interesting morphology and magnetic properties (. Another area of interest involves the development of fast, cost effective and direct-write techniques to pattern polymers on various substrates. Here, we have been using atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips as a tool to draw micro- and nanopatterns on polymer films. We have patterned polyvinyl carbazole (PVK) films and optimized patterning parameters such as applied voltage and tip speed towards fine - tuning the size/shape/aspect ratio of the patterns ( Adv. Mater. 2005 , 17 , 1282). Some of the patterned surfaces are conducting owing to the formation/presence of electronically conjugated polymers and are thermally stable.
