The Faculty of Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (UofT) in Canada have instigated a joint initiative to foster closer ties between the two universities and to give the students from these faculties the exciting opportunity to travel and study in different academic environments. In the first instance, the initiative involves Minor Programmes in Environmental Biology and Environmental Chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry has coordinated the Environmental Chemistry Minor with the Department of Chemistry and Centre for Environment at UofT. As part of this programme students from the Faculty of Science will travel to the UofT in the 2nd Semester of their third year to study modules towards the Environmental Chemistry Minor.
Aim of the Environmental Chemistry minor program
The Environmental Chemistry minor program focuses on developing an understanding of the chemical impacts of humankind's activities on the soil, air, and water. Emphasis is given to developing analytical skills and a mechanistic understanding of the subject.
Course Details
To be awarded a minor in Environmental Chemistry, NUS students are required to read and pass the following:
NUS Modules
1) CM2121 Organic Chemistry
2) GEK1535 Our Atmosphere: A Chemical Perspective
UofT Courses
3) EXG235H Physics and Chemistry of Planet Earth
4) CHM317H Introduction to Instrumental Methods of Analysis*
5) CHM310H Environmental Chemistry (Capstone)
6) CHM415H Atmospheric Chemistry
* CHM317H Introduction to Instrumental Methods of Analysis will be mapped to CM3241 Instrumental Analysis at NUS even though this module is no longer mounted by the Department of Chemistry. For students whose major includes CM modules this course can be counted towards their major (together with CM2121).
Note: Students whose major includes the CM modules taken for this minor, not more than 8 MCs are allowed to be double-counted. The duration of the overseas exchange is one semester in UofT, from Jan to May.
Financial Responsibilities
For their studies at UofT, students pay tuition fees to NUS only. However, they will have to pay for their airfare, accommodation, books, health insurance, living expenses (food, public transport etc.).
Eligibility
The Environmental Chemistry Minor is open to all NUS students from the Faculty of Science who have completed their second year of undergraduate studies.
